FAMILY BUSINESSES

At Busi-Psych the focus is on the education of those charged with educating others in their systems. The vehicle to achieve this is a Continuity Canvas, which provides business-owning family stakeholders the opportunity to learn...and build the capacity to design integrated planning architecture that will serve current and future generations.

Put very simply, planning for continuity involves four distinct types of planning: strategic, estate, family talent development, and governance plans. Business-owning families who have successfully transitioned across multiple generations attribute their longevity to devoting considerable time to building capability with these four planning processes.

GROUNDED IN THE 3 CIRCLE PARADIGM

Grounded in the universally-accepted 3-circle (family system, owner system, managers system) paradigm, the Busi-Psych Continuity Analysis considers that strategic planning reduces the tension between the manager system and owner system, estate planning reduces the tension between the family system and owner system, and family talent development planning reduces the tension between the family system and manager system. Additionally, governance system planning reduces the tension among the systems and, importantly, is the custodian of family values.

This approach has been captured in Justin's 2021 book: Continuity Model Generation (Wiley Publishing), a feature of which is how to construct a Continuity Canvas.

Thank you.  The presentation was so insightful, not only for some of our clients, but for our “family in business” as well.
